Laura Erviti Estruch
b.1990, Barcelona
Lives and works in Bristol, United Kingdom.
Laura Erviti is a contemporary surrealist and an environmentalist. She creates surreal figurative paintings and murals that absorb CO2.
Laura has been diving into her subconscious for fifteen years, writing down all her dreams in dream notebooks, and then analyzing them through painting. This passion for studying the mind originates from her youth, having grown up with psychoanalyst parents in Barcelona, and being surrounded by books and conversations about the human psyche. From these influences, she began to create compositions using the imagery of her dreams, choosing the objects and subjects for their aesthetics and meaning.
In recent years, Laura has been researching the Climate Emergency, focusing on the potential solutions we have to create new futures. Her works reflect on environmentalism, new research on how to solve it, and potential ways forward. She also aims to tackle environmental issues directly, due to her chosen materials.
Laura’s practice aims to be completely sustainable, using second-hand materials to up-cycle into canvas frames and collecting all the non-recyclable plastics to create sculptures. She previously worked with oil paints, however, after much research, she discovered a paint that was not just natural and sustainable, but one that is carbon negative. Graphenstone is a paint made of limestone, that absorbs CO2 during the curation process of the paint. She is now sponsored by the brand, and they work in partnership to spread the word about a greener generation.
Laura creates Carbon capturing murals and canvases that depict the issues and potential solutions to the climate emergency. Her murals bring the environmentalist conversation to the general public while actively participating in reducing emissions.
Erviti’s compositions present elaborate combinations of figurative elements that create new narratives when presented together. Her compositions lay between the real and surreal, by juxtaposing images new meanings emerge, depicting different perspectives presented as layers of the visual narrative.
Her practice could be described as Artivist, as she focuses on socio-political issues as the main topic of her compositions. She presents her work in gallery exhibitions and street art mural paintings to achieve intersectionality in the audience and democratize her ideas.
